Protest loom as Governors meet to protect interest in party primaries
Some Governors met today at the Sokoto Govt House Abuja to mount pressure on the President as well as to sponsor protests and media commentaries across the nation against Direct primaries, to intimidate the Leadership and Members of NASS to stop supporting Direct Primary since INEC’s stand that Direct Primary is at no extra cost to the electoral umpire is not in favour of Governors who use to their regular (indirect) delegate system.
This move comes amidst interest by Governors to prevail on the President to decline assent appears not have received favorable response from the President as it’s also widely known that President Buhari benefitted from Direct Primary in 2019 and has been a known fan of Direct Primary in support of political participation from grassroots to the Top.
It must be noted that several governors are dissatisfied by the move of the National Assembly and this is the latest antics in their toolbox.
