Disu Takes the Helm as Rivers Police Commissioner
… A Familiar sheriff Returns
In a strategic move aimed at bolstering the efficiency of policing in Rivers State, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has appointed CP Olatunji Disu as the new Commissioner of Police for the region.
This decision comes amidst a series of appointments signaling a comprehensive effort to fortify security measures and combat violent crimes across Nigeria.
CP Disu’s appointment is part of a broader initiative that sees the IGP appointing over seven commissioners of police to lead various commands.
This proactive approach reflects the commitment to strengthening security apparatus, addressing violent crimes, and ensuring seamless coordination of policing operations nationwide.
Among the newly appointed and redeployed commissioners are CP George Chuku, now in charge of BNS Command, CP Ahmed Tijani overseeing Jigawa Command, CP Dan Shawulu at Niger Command, CP Usman Hayatu taking the reins at GBS Command, CP Danjuma Aboki heading IMS Command, and CP Isyaku Muhammed commanding OSS Command, among others.

Disu’s appointment marks his return to Rivers State, where he previously served in various capacities, including as DPO Elimbu, DPO Elelenwo, Commander of SARS, AC Cid Rivers and Commander of the Anti-Kidnapping unit.
His expertise garnered during these roles positions him as a seasoned leader ready to navigate the complex security landscape of the state.
This latest promotion comes seven months after CP Disu’s promotion, alongside 32 others, from the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to Commissioners of Police (CPs). His subsequent appointment as the principal staff of the IGP, leading and coordinating the security team attached to the IGP’s office, underscores his proven track record in maintaining law and order.
Disu’s familiarity with Rivers State stems from his earlier service before being transferred to Lagos to head the Lagos RRS.
This shift was in response to the urgent call to address security concerns in the state.
Now, as he assumes the role of Commissioner of Police for Rivers, CP Disu brings a wealth of experience and a dynamic leadership style to the forefront.
CP Disu steps into his new role following the recent protests by Rivers youths demanding the redeployment of CP Nwonyi Emeka.
The public outcry arose in the wake of reports that certain police officers had allegedly threatened the State Governor, Siminalaye Fubara, and even fired shots at him during his inspection of the fire-damaged state House of Assembly chambers.
