CHIEF UCHE NNAJI A TESTED AND PROVEN POLITICAL ENIGMA
CHIEF UCHE NNAJI A TESTED AND PROVEN POLITICAL ENIGMA
Chief, Uche Nnaji was the Governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress in the concluded 2023 general elections.
Against the orders of the then-military administrator of Enugu State, Uche led his senatorial zone during the UNCP/GDM/DPN political era to guarantee that Chief Jim Nwobodo dealt Senator Ken Nnamani a crushing loss. Ken Nnamani of the UNCP had his first political prison baptism as a result of his defeat in the first Enugu East senatorial election. For ‘derailing’ the Abacha transition scheme and supporting opposition candidates in Enugu State,’ Nwakaibie served nearly four months in jail.
When General Abacha passed away, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, the new Head of State, freed all political prisoners, allowing him to reclaim his freedom. Nwakaibie played a significant role in the establishment of the PDP in Enugu State at the beginning of party politics in 1998.
He was going to run for senator in the PDP’s Enugu East Senatorial Zone, but the party’s then-National Secretary, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, changed his name to Senator Ken Nnamani after he switched from the APP. Angered by the injustice, he switched to the Alliance for Democracy (AD) 72 hours before the election and defeated PDP candidate Senator Ken Nnamani in 65 out of 66 wards.
The guber candidate came to the limelight in 1999 when he won the senatorial ticket of the then Alliance for Democracy, AD. He was later to step down for Chief Jim Nwobodo, who was eventually elected senator for the senatorial district.
Uche Nnaji is a brother to Hon Nnoli Nnaji representing Nkanu East and West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. Nnoli is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the House of Representatives in the 2023 general elections.
The emergence of Mr Uche Nnaji in Enugu followed the successful governorship primary election organise by the party’s Electoral Committee led by Sheriff Jalaba.
He polled 1,070 votes out of 1,100 votes cast during the exercise monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which saw him as a sole cleared aspirant of the party.
Mr Uche Nnaji, who hails from Nkanu West Local Government Area, said if voted in, his government would work towards turning around for better, “the decaying infrastructure in the state, which the PDP had supervised in the last 23 years.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Mr Uche Nnaji as a ministerial nominee who is representing Enugu State on July 27th, 2023.
